VIGS at Rothamsted Research
Current status
Experiments proving that BSMV and fungal phytopathogens can be safely contained in the new facility are close to completion. We are expecting to obtain all necessary Defra and HSE licences for the VIGS work by spring 2009.
Future directions
First generation projects will involve identification of genes required for susceptibility or resistance to Mycosphaerella graminicola, a necrotrophic wheat leaf-specific pathogen, and mycotoxin-producing Fusarium spp. in wheat floral organs.
In the longer term, when the technique is robust and becomes routine, we plan to expand its application to the identification of wheat and Triticum monococcum genes required for other agriculturally important traits and pathways (e.g. grain shape and quality, drought tolerance, nitrogen nutrition and insect attraction and repellence
