Transformation in Oats
IBERS
Current status
Oat cultivar Melys is transformable by particle bombardment, using the bar gene for selection, but efficiency is not high. Experiments are underway to improve embryogenic callus production and to use Agrobacterium to transform immature embryos and immature embryo calli.
Costs and time scales
Depending on time of year 10-20 independently transformed T0 plants can usually be produced within six months. A further six months is needed to obtain T1 seed. Costs depend on the degree of collaboration
Current work and future directions at IBERS
Experiments are underway to improve embryogenic callus production and to use Agrobacterium to transform immature embryos and immature embryo calli.
